PMMA Injection Molding
We mold PMMA (Acrylic) (and compatible grades) for functional, structural and aesthetic parts — from low-volume bridge production to high-volume runs.
PMMA: Why It's the Go-To Resin for Transparent Parts
PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate / acrylic) is the reference transparent plastic — FirstMold's factory uses it most for lamp covers, product casings, vehicle lights and tool housings (https://firstmold.com/pmma-injection-molding/). MOLDITQUICK (Dongguan Guohong Precision, 10000 m², 280 staff) molds the same grades with ISO9001 / ISO13485 quality control.
The most light-transmitting plastic — up to ~92% transmission, with transparent, translucent and opaque color options across the range.
Good scratch resistance — surfaces survive handling better than PC or PS, cutting post-processing on many parts.
Outstanding weather resistance — UV-stable and non-yellowing, so outdoor lamp covers and signage keep their clarity for years.
Rigid and dimensionally stable — amorphous structure gives predictable shrinkage and holds tight optical geometry.
Glossy, aesthetic surfaces — high-gloss molded finish suits visible consumer and automotive parts without painting.
Proven appearance control — black spots, flash, scratches, weld lines and short shots are all checked against your acceptance standard, not ours.
PMMA Processing Parameters We Control
Barrel, mold and shrinkage windows per published PMMA molding data (https://firstmold.com/pmma-injection-molding/); drying guidance per industry standard. Every window is verified in-house on Sodick presses under ISO9001 / ISO13485 control.
| Parameter | Recommended Range | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel temperature | 200–250 °C | Above ~260 °C the melt degrades and yellows; tight residence-time control keeps optical parts water-white. |
| Mold temperature | 40–80 °C | Hotter molds replicate polished cavity surfaces and reduce stress; colder molds shorten the cycle. |
| Mold shrinkage | 0.3–0.6 % | Low and predictable for an amorphous resin — critical for lens and light-guide geometry. |
| Drying | 80–90 °C, 2–4 h | Hygroscopic resin — moisture in the melt is the #1 cause of silver streaks and bubbles. |
| Wall thickness | 1.5–5 mm typical | Uniform walls avoid sink marks and internal stress in transparent parts. |
| Injection speed | Medium, with controlled packing | Fast enough to fill thin sections, slow enough to avoid burning and jetting marks. |
PMMA Grades & Modifications We Mold

Impact-modified
Rubber-toughened acrylic for parts that face drops and knocks without losing clarity.
- Higher Izod impact
- Chip resistance
- Cosmetic parts
UV-stabilized outdoor
Formulated for lamp covers, signage and automotive exterior parts that must not yellow.
- Long-term UV stability
- Color retention
- Outdoor 5+ years
High-flow
Thin-wall and long-flow geometries molded with lower internal stress.
- Thin-wall fill
- Lower stress
- Faster cycles
Light-diffusing
Controlled haze for backlit panels, diffusers and indicator covers.
- Uniform glow
- LED covers
- Display panels
Common PMMA Defects — and How We Prevent Them
Appearance is the acceptance criterion for most PMMA parts; the defect list FirstMold's factory checks includes black spots, flash, scratches, weld lines and short shots (https://firstmold.com/pmma-injection-molding/). Here's the prevention side of our process.
Wet or degraded resin vaporizes in the melt, leaving silver surface lines on transparent parts.
Gas or unpacked thick sections leave air pockets — fatal on lens and display parts.
Knit lines around inserts and ribs scatter light exactly where clarity is required.
Fast-freezing thin sections fill incompletely when flow or temperature is off-window.
80–90 °C / 2–4 h drying with moisture checks — splay and bubbles are prevented, not polished out.
Gates and weld lines are designed out of visible zones at DFM, verified by mold-flow analysis.
Barrel held at 200–250 °C with controlled residence — no yellowing, no degradation streaks.

PMMA Design Rules We Enforce
- ✓PMMA shrinks 0.3–0.6 % — compensate in cavity sizing and keep walls uniform to avoid sink and stress crazing.
- ✓Draft 1–2° minimum — PMMA is rigid and can drag or crack at ejection without proper draft.
- ✓Gate to keep weld lines out of optical surfaces — placement is fixed at DFM, not T1.
- ✓Fillet internal corners at ≥ 0.5× wall thickness — sharp corners concentrate stress and craze under load.
- ✓Use high-flow grades for thin walls and long flow lengths — standard PMMA freezes early.
- ✓Never skip drying — hygroscopic PMMA needs 80–90 °C / 2–4 h or the part shows splay.
- ✓Design clearance for PMMA's limited ductility at press-fits and snap-fits — specify impact-modified grades where snaps must flex.
PMMA Injection Molding FAQ
- ✓Q: Is PMMA the same as acrylic? A: Yes — PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is the chemical name for acrylic resin; 'acrylic' is the trade term.
- ✓Q: What light transmission can I expect? A: Up to ~92% — the highest of any plastic, which is why lenses, lamp covers and display panels are PMMA territory.
- ✓Q: Why did my clear parts come out with silver lines? A: Moisture — PMMA is hygroscopic and must be dried 80–90 °C for 2–4 h; we moisture-check resin before every run.
- ✓Q: Is PMMA suitable for outdoor parts? A: Yes — excellent UV stability with non-yellowing behavior; UV-stabilized grades are standard for signage and automotive lighting.
- ✓Q: Can PMMA be molded to tight optical tolerances? A: Amorphous shrinkage of 0.3–0.6 % is predictable; optical geometry is held with cavity compensation and verified by first article.
- ✓Q: Do you offer transparent color matching? A: Yes — transparent, translucent and opaque tints matched to Pantone/RAL with ΔE ≤ 1.0.
- ✓Q: What lead times for PMMA parts? A: 7–12 days low volume, 25–30 days production, DFM and T1 samples included, shipped globally.
