PVC Injection Molding
We mold PVC (and compatible grades) for functional, structural and aesthetic parts — from low-volume bridge production to high-volume runs.
Rigid vs Flexible PVC: Which Do You Need?
Rigid/flexible split per FirstMold's PVC page (https://firstmold.com/pvc-injection-molding/). PVC is an economical option for high-volume, complex shapes, in rigid or flexible form.
PVC Processing Parameters We Control
PVC's window is the narrowest of commodity plastics — melt above ~200 °C begins thermal decomposition (HCl release). Values per published PVC molding data; MOLDITQUICK uses stabilized compounds and chrome-plated molds.
| Parameter | Recommended Range | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel temperature | 160–190 °C | Above ~200 °C PVC decomposes — the window is narrow and must be held precisely. |
| Mold temperature | 30–60 °C | Cooler molds protect the material and shorten cycle time. |
| Thermal stabilizers | Required (lead-free systems) | Stabilizers absorb HCl and protect both part and machine from corrosion. |
| Mold surface | Chrome-plated / corrosion-resistant | Degradation by-products attack mold steel — chrome plating extends tool life. |
| Mold shrinkage | 0.2–0.5 % | Low and predictable for vinyl molding. |
| Venting | Generous at the parting line | HCl and trapped gases must escape to avoid burning and silver streaks. |
| Screw & barrel | Corrosion-resistant steel | HCl by-products attack standard screws; special alloy barrels extend life. |

Everyday goods
Toys, handles, knobs and grips where PVC's feel and cost beat other plastics.
PVC Defects — and How We Handle Them
Defect and countermeasure pairs per PVC molding practice (https://firstmold.com/pvc-injection-molding/).
Overheated PVC turns brown and releases corrosive HCl gas.
Barrel held at 160–190 °C with lead-free stabilizers; the process stops before degradation starts.
Trapped HCl and moisture flash at the cavity surface.
Generous parting-line vents and corrosion-resistant cavity steel.
Additives deposit on the mold, dulling surfaces over time.
Regular polishing cycles keep cosmetics consistent over long runs.
Meeting melt fronts fuse weakly, especially in rigid PVC.
Gate placement review and hotter melt within the safe window.
Narrow window plus hesitation leaves cavities partially filled.
Balanced runners and generous vents keep the fill complete and stable.
PVC Design Rules We Enforce
- ✓Specify stabilized PVC compounds — lead-free thermal stabilizers are mandatory for injection molding.
- ✓Design molds with chrome-plated or corrosion-resistant cavity surfaces; PVC degrades standard steel over time.
- ✓Avoid sharp corners and thick sections that trap heat — both invite decomposition.
- ✓Plan generous venting; HCl and volatiles must escape the cavity.
- ✓Keep wall thickness uniform to hold a steady cooling rate.
- ✓For flexible PVC, check plasticizer migration and its effect on adjoining parts and finishes.
- ✓Run PVC on dedicated or thoroughly purged machines — cross-contamination with other resins degrades it.
- ✓Keep the melt moving — long residence time in the barrel is the most common cause of PVC degradation.
PVC Injection Molding FAQ
- ✓Q: What is the difference between rigid and flexible PVC parts? A: Rigid PVC is unplasticized and stiff; flexible PVC is plasticized and soft — we help you pick the grade family at DFM.
- ✓Q: Why are chrome-plated molds used for PVC? A: PVC's degradation by-products (HCl) corrode standard mold steel; chrome plating protects the tool and extends its life.
- ✓Q: Is PVC hard to injection mold? A: The window is narrow (barrel 160–190 °C) — above ~200 °C the material decomposes. Experience with stabilizers and venting is what makes it reliable.
- ✓Q: What lead time for PVC parts? A: 7–12 days low volume, 25–30 days production, with DFM and tooling in-house.
- ✓Q: Do you mold food-contact PVC? A: Grade and additive compliance are reviewed against your spec at material selection, before anything is molded.
- ✓Q: Can you color-match PVC parts? A: Yes — color control tolerates no difference; we match your Pantone or sample under controlled lighting.
- ✓Q: Does PVC need special machines? A: The screw and barrel should be corrosion-resistant, and the machine must hold the narrow 160–190 °C window.
- ✓Q: Why does my PVC part smell? A: A sharp, acidic smell indicates thermal degradation — our process controls keep the melt below ~200 °C so parts come out odor-free.
- ✓Q: Do you mold two-color PVC? A: We have two-shot capability in-house; PVC over PVC and PVC over TPE are both proven.
